Rehash: Cruiserweight Classic – September 8th & 15th 2016

Final round-up here, as life got in the way of full recaps!

QUARTER-FINALS

Noam Dar vs. Zack Sabre Jr.

Lots of strong offense here from both men, Noam Dar putting in a hell of a good show. Great mat work from both men, with Sabre’s leg worked the whole way through, putting on a believable show of injury and of a battle to continue.

Winner: Zack Sabre Jr.

TJ Perkins vs. Rich Swann

A tactically brilliant match that even managed to make a bad landing on a moonsault look good. Both men knew exactly what they were doing in the ring, and it showed. Both men adapted their offense to kayfabe injuries masterfully, telling is the story with no words needed.

Winner: TJ Perkins

SEMI-FINALS

Gran Metalik vs. Zack Sabre Jr.

With the CWC trophy near the entrance and the 30-minute time limit noted, we had some stunning lucha-like offense, involving a springboard senton and an impressive frankenstiener. Both men pulled good submission moves, but in the end, Metalik hit the as-yet unbeaten Metalik Driver, and it was all over.

Winner: Gran Metalik

Kota Ibushi vs. TJ Perkins

An impressive moonsault from Ibushi was a great spot in this match, along with numerous kicks. Perkins worked the knee hard from the start, looking for a submission victory with the knee bar. In the end, though, it was a crossface that took Ibushi out of the competition.

Winner: TJ Perkins

FINAL

Gran Metalik vs. TJ Perkins

With a 60-minute time limit and a chance to become the first Raw Cruiserweight Champion and thus a huge part of WWE’s cruiserweight initiative, this match got underway slowly, with a chance to build offense, rather than leap straight to big spots. Plenty of two counts for this match, and for once, the Metalik Driver didn’t seem to be the astounding and unbeatable offense it had been for the rest of the competition. In the end, Metalik fell victim to the knee bar, like so many before him, and tapped out.

Winner: TJ Perkins

Congrats, TJ! We look forward to seeing you, and many of the other men from this competition, over on Raw!
