Things all looked peaceful on the road to WrestleMania, when all of a sudden – ROADBLOCK. We’re meant to believe this is in the form of Dean Ambrose showing up and daring to challenge Triple H for the heavyweight title, but I think it’s really that the writers have realised they have no set up for the matches at WrestleMania, and need some story time.
Let’s start with the matches not on the card:
This whole show is to set up for WrestleMania, so we have to assume that one or more of the three women in the Diva’s Championship match will show up. Charlotte hasn’t been wrestling lately, so I hope she’s not injured, but if not then she could dominate over Alicia Fox in, say a ten-minute long match where she proves how powerful she is in comparison to the other women, and just how strong she is before heading into WrestleMania.
Alternatively, we could have something Lana and Brie Bella related, story mode, and learn just what’s happening with those two. Having Brie lead Lana into her first WrestleMania event would be pretty cool, and a way of passing the torch if the rumours are true – and they seem like it – that this might be Brie’s last WrestleMania. Even better, we could have BOTH of these matches at Roadblock – hey, you never know, we might get two women’s matches! Alright, don’t all laugh at once.
Highlight Reel (Possibly?)
Newly-turned heel Chris Jericho made a huge thing out of burning the Y2AJ merch on SmackDown this Thursday, so we can pretty much say outright that AJ Styles will be turning up for this, and it’ll become some sort of impromptu match or similar. As far as predicting this goes, I’m not convinced it really matters, though showing Styles winning without Jericho’s help would be a real kick in the teeth for the old dog within kayfabe.
Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens?
Obviously we’ve not idea if this is going to happen, but it seems like a reasonable suspicion after what we’ve had lately, from the Royal Rumble onwards. I’m sort of hoping a match with these two happens, or something else that helps set up for the Intercontinental Title match at Mania. Also, otherwise we’ve got, what, six matches? Please god not another three-hour show where most of the final hour is drivel, Fastlane ruined us in that last hour
EDIT: Turns out, Kevin Owens and AJ Styles are due to have a 30min Iron Man match in Atlantic City tonight, at a WWE house show, so neither will be arriving for Roadblock! If Roadblock doesn’t have a match at least worth the weight of that (other than the Triple H vs. Dean Ambrose one) I’m going to be very unhappy, knowing I could have been watching that match instead!
Brock Lesnar vs. Bray Wyatt
The Beast vs. The New Face of Fear, well, this is going to be… something? I’m figuring someone on the Wyatt family has to interfere, although by all accounts half of them are doing a house show that night, but otherwise this is… ludicrous. Bray Wyatt is not the best wrestler in his family team, and he’s certainly not one I’d put up against Lesnar. Luke Harper, if you could play it up enough to make it interesting, now that would be a match worth watching, because the guy has moves that are pretty impressive.
Unless Brock catches alight during the match through spontaneous combustion, or rage at having to fight Bray Wyatt, I’m pretty sure the Beast will be winning this one. On the plus side, maybe it might get super violent and messy? Maybe?
Prediction: Brock Lesnar to win
The New Day vs. Sheamus & Barrett – Tag Team Titles Match
Well, this match was thrown together because the tag team division is slowly dying, isn’t it? God knows what’s going on here, but I think it’s safe to say that the titles are safe on The New Day, and that the status quo will be upheld. I still think we see The New Day drop their titles to either The Usos or Enzo and Cass if they debut properly, then the Dudleys take them after that for their tenth win, then whoever didn’t have a go before gets a go at the titles again, before The New Day get them back. A heel stable with titles is okay, but without a title? Much more interesting and vicious in pursuit of victory.
On the other hand, I love seeing Barrett back in the ring, as he’s been side-lined for so long, and he and Sheamus have a bond that you can see when they work together. More than that, you can see how they enjoy it, too, and the grins they have when they get the job done together. Plus, The New Day are always entertaining, so it’ll be a fun match whatever happens.
Prediction: The New Day retains.
The Revival (Dash & Dawson) vs. Enzo & Big Cass – NXT Tag Team Titles Match
Now, this is a weird one. For me, part of the joy of Cass and Enzo has been that they haven’t had the NXT tag team titles, that they’re desperately grasping but they just don’t seem to fall into their hands. This is sure to be a good match either way, but I think keeping the titles off the challengers is the more interesting option.
I actually think it would be cool to send them up to the main roster never having held those titles, and have them enter the scrap for the WWE tag titles still hungry for something to prove their worth, small fish in a big pond, and to make them battle it out for that.
Prediction: The Revival to keep the titles, Enzo and Cass to come up to WWE
Triple H vs. Dean Ambrose – WWE World Heavyweight Title Match
Oh, god. They’ve given us hope, and the most dangerous thing you can give a WWE audience is hope. We want, so badly, for Dean to take the title, but then what? Then the WrestleMania main event is Roman Reigns vs. Dean Ambrose (and a Dean Ambrose who has already fought Brock Lesnar), and it’ll either be champion retaining, which would still be so cool, but maybe not as exciting as it could be, or bloody Roman Reigns bloody winning the bloody title and being bloody booed. I just feel so much like they’ve written themselves into a corner here.
So you know what? I’m going to believe in this hope they’ve given us, I’m going to believe that someone’s managed to get Vince to change his mind and agree that maybe a face Roman Reigns who gets booed isn’t the best champion we could ask for right now. I’m going to take this at face value and say that I know Dean Ambrose at his best could beat Triple H – clean. But only if both sides play by the rules, and there’s no outside interference.
…oh god, what if they have Roman come in and ‘save’ Dean from Triple H? Please no, please, please no. I’m suddenly so scared about this whole thing.
Prediction: I don’t care how unlikely it is, I’m saying Dean Ambrose to win and take the title through to WrestleMania.
